This was an entertaining assignment for VEGAS magazine, highlighting the March horoscope for Aries. I've been enjoying my small foray into more fantasy-type artworks lately!
The illustration's concept was pretty open, it just had to pertain to Aries in some way. I found a lot of the imagery in the article very appealing and descriptive:
"With a Ram at your side, diamond in your sword and warrior in your blood, you charge forward."
I thought it would be interesting to translate this sentence into my illustration (trusty ram companion, flaming diamond sword, etc.), and allude to the springtime with the decorative flower border. My AD was totally on board with turning this into a fantasy illustration and I loved the opportunity to geek out. I definitely hearkened back to my high school days of doodling badass warrior chicks in my notebooks. Fitting the illustration into an unconventional shape was a secondary bonus--it was a fun puzzle, and something I hope I get to do more of.

simply beautiful, kali! the color scheme is spot on. i caught myself staring at the hair for way too long. beautiful color shifts going on in there. will you be doing any more of these for other zodiac signs? would be amazing to see all 12 signs as a set.

Nicely done ram head and I particularly like the article white space intruding into the illustration via branches and leaves. This warrior has petite feet.

Jeremy & Nancy-- I WISH!! Unfortunately, this was just a one-shot...haha, you guys are making me think about doing a series on my own now! (if I had any time!!) But thanks, you guys are so nice. :) And Jeremy, that's probably the best hair I've ever done, haha...I'm taking a look at everything again now, and I wish I had done some more color changes like that in the torso/outfit!
Steve-- Haha thanks, and yes she does have petite feet! And petite hands too! I figured if you're a metaphysical warrior with magic powers it doesn't matter if you've got a fighter's physique or not :)
